The slide bar is a little confusing at first but you do get the hang of it. Its really not that big of a deal, but some people find this frustrating and give the camera a poor rating. I don’t understand that. I love that they put a headphone jack on the camera. In the past two models I felt that the video got very pixelated when the camera was zoomed. I don’t see that as much with the Flip Slide Hd. The video stays pretty clear when zooming.

If you are around your computer and have the USB connection handy then this isn’t really needed. However if you travel a lot, or can’t easily get to your computer port, or just will be out for the day and need to recharge your Flip camcorder part way through, then this might just be the answer you needed.

To help you with framing your distance photo’s the addition of the extra zoom capability will delight you. It’s not the top of the range with zoom speed and doesn’t have automatic image stabilization like some of the more expensive lenses available, but as an interim lens, at a good price, to use and get quite good framing for distance shots it’s quite acceptable.

Make sure you use a tripod for best picture clarity, and as always good lighting will help with picture quality.

One thing lacking from the lens is a lens cap. To maintain the condition of your lenses you really do need to make sure they have caps. The cap is available separately, and isn’t too expensive.

The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 it doesn’t have USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) and though having built-in AF motor, it does seem slow. And since telephoto lenses are often used for capturing high-speed events (like sport, running animals etc), its low-speed focusing can make it a bit frustrating when trying to capture the perfect shot.

If this is important to you and you can justify the extra price, then the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras will feel like a better investment. The zoom speed is noticeably quicker with the USM, and so for action shots the clarity will be better and more satisfying.

In summary, if you are a hobbyist who just wants some extra zoom reach for still shots, then you will get plenty of use from this lens and probably be quite happy with it. If you want to capture action shots or do a lot of photography in changing light conditions then it will be frustrating and it will be worth upgrading to the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM for better quality, quicker zoom, and sharper photos.

The still and video capture both work well in both bright light and low light.
When playing the sound back via the camera it is hard to distinquish, but fine once it is uploaded.

Great quality for the price, basically well worth the money you pay for it, it is incredibly inexpensive for a camera of such value.

Its 3.6 optical zoom may not be able to pick sand off an eagle’s beak at a thousand yards. So it won’t blow up to billboard size without a loss of definition. But as a real world everyday camera this is a fine and professional level camera that will do a far better job than you expected. Much better than just using a cell-phone.

With the built in macro mode you can zoom right in on a cactus blossom from two inches away and have perfect focus. Take a photo of a baby’s toes and blow them up to 16×20. This strength of macro was recently unimaginable, and yet here you have this power within a humble, tiny and inexpensive package.

This camera also comes with the standard sized screw input for mounting on a tripod. You will really appreciate the steadiness a tripod always brings, and the freedom, no less with this great camera, which so thoughtfully has a tripod screw-in.
